BAHNO clarification

We have noted with concern the increasing number of conferences operating in a predatory manner and claiming to be operating with the support/cooperation of BAHNO when no such undertaking has been made.

A case in point has been brought to our attention this week in that the organisers of the 3rd International Conference on Otorhinolaryngology to be held in Dubai, UAE on 27th and 28th November 2023 have been claiming, falsely, that BAHNO is involved and supports this event.

This is absolutely untrue.

BAHNO is an inclusive Head and Neck society. As part of our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion agenda, we believe conference/education events are vehicles for promoting representative diversity and thereby we are keen to ensure events supported and/or promoted through our social media (including twitter feed and website) are reflective of this ethos. The Dubai conference does not fulfil our requirements and BAHNO has protested strongly to the organisers about the unauthorised use of the BAHNO name.

Call for nominations for ENT representative  on Council

ENT Representative

Professor Jarrod Homer will have completed two terms of office by the AGM 2023. Nominations are therefore sought for a representative from the ENT specialty to join Ms Hannah Fox on Council.

The post is for four years and may be extended for a further 3 years. All members of Council must be fully subscribed and have been members of the Association for more than 12 months. Council members are expected to attend the AGM and at least 3 of the 4 scheduled meetings of Council per year. Each nomination must be accompanied by the candidate’s signed indication of willingness to stand for election and details of a proposer and seconder (both either a Full or associate member). A ballot will be held, if necessary.

Please click here for the nomination form.

As the membership may be aware, BAHNO has made considerable efforts over the last two years to prioritise the agenda of diverse representation on council to authentically support the needs of our ever-growing membership and advocate for the patients we serve. In the recent call for nominations two applications were received for the post, however one applicant subsequently withdrew, citing the lack of diverse representation among the applicants as a driver for their decision.  This applicant has served on council in the past and felt that on principle, they should lean out.  BAHNO council applauds this stance on principle and has responded by extending the nomination period for the ENT representative on council. BAHNO acknowledges that as a society we must make greater efforts to engage all our membership and raise awareness of opportunities to serve on council.

We would encourage the membership to consider this opportunity again and welcome applications from all, including from historically under-represented groups. For members who wish to make informal enquiries regarding the position and commitment involved please contact Professor Paleri, President, or Professor Andrew Schache, Honorary Secretary.

We would encourage all ENT members – who form the largest membership group – to consider applying for this position and engaging the members in a ballot. Nominees will be expected to provide a short statement of their intent. The nomination form is available here.

***The new closing date for nominations is Friday 17th March 2023***
